Middle Schoolers Pick Obama for Prez

The school's Mock Presidential Election was held in the Higgins Library on Friday, Nov. 2; there were 1,255 ballots cast. President Barack Obama won with 68 percent of the vote.

The Mock Election is organized by the school's Grade 7 Panthers cluster under the direction of social studies teacher Amanda Veiga. Students prepare and count ballots and usher voters to the polls. Some students serve as campaign supporters and the library is decorated with a patriotic theme.

Kindergarten through Grade 5 students who accompany a parent to the polls tomorrow may also cast a vote for President through the Peabody Education Foundation's Kids Voting USA program. Kids Voting is open at city polling places fron 3-8 p.m.

Pretty instructive... kids believe almost anything. I can see them being easily swayed by a souped-up Pepsi symbol, use of cool words like "Forward," press conferences with flags starched to look like triangles and a full cast of "admiring onlookers" to project confidence. Yup, symbolism works the best on those who know the least, but thank goodness that at least most of these kids will figure this out around the time they cast their first votes!
