Top School Department Salaries in 2012
Here's a look at the highest-paid Peabody teachers, administrators and support staff in 2012.
[Editor's Note: We were remiss initially in not explaining the unusually high income for food services director in 2012. Janyce Harkins retired in October after 40 years with the Peabody Public Schools. Her actual salary for the job was $51,243, but she also received $52,740 in other earnings for 2012, which was due to an accumulation of unused sick days, vacation days or other benefits she was entitled to under her contract.]
We reported Tuesday who the overall top earners were on the city payroll for 2012, and today we take a look specifically at what Peabody school employees took home last year.
The incomes in the chart below, which lists the top 50 earners for the School Department, represent gross income, which would include salaries, longevity bonuses, stipends and other compensation.
Two people you'll notice missing from their usual spots on the list are the superintendent of schools and high school principal.
That's because Interim Superintendent Herb Levine stepped down mid-year as Joe Mastrocola came on-board as the new superintendent and Ed Sapienza retired mid-year.
Levine earned $103,412 (he also received stipends for other temporary positions he filled during the year elsewhere in the city) while Mastrocola earned $83,700.
Although Sapienza was hired back as an interim principal, he can only earn a percentage of his former salary due to his retirement (pension). He was paid $77,469 in 2012.

$103,000 for the food service director?! Is that a joke? The woman has a high school education and runs one of the worst food service departments on the north shore! Who does she know to earn such an outrageous salary?????

Exactly my thought! I don't know her, nor do I know her background, but $103K for overseeing school cafeterias?! It is interesting to read these salaries when you continually hear that people in education are underpaid. There are teachers in the high school making over $80K!!!

OMG, $80k, the nerve.....to be confined in that building with thousands of teenagers, no teacher should make LESS than $80k! Maybe that would motivate them to stay at in the district and help our children excel.

Question.
What are the following:
IEP Chairperson.
Adjustment counselor
Passos Avanti Preschool Director
ROTC jobs. Are they paid by the federal govt.?
Just asking.
Pretty good paying positions though.
Our tax dollars at work.

Russ, to answer your questions:
1. The IEP Chairperson is generally tasked with assessing and overseeing Individual Education Plans for special education students and works within a team of special ed professionals in the district. There is one chairperson for every two or three schools and one for out-of-district students.
2. Adjustment counselors specifically work with special needs students and there is a relevant staffing mandate from the state.
3. Passos Avante is a preschool program run out of the South School.
4. As far as I'm aware, the federal government does pay some portion of the ROTC teachers' salaries, but I don't know what that is. They are essentially teachers as well as advisors for the program.

So the Peabody School System has how many School Psychologist's ?? 4 ?? is that Really needed ? I also question a Vocational Director at 95K per year ? Does Peabody Have that big of a Chapter 74 Voc Program to Warrant such a Position ?

All of our teachers should be paid high salaries to do what they do on a daily basis. Our Vocational director needs to be making more, she oversees the whole program and is responsible for hiring qualified staff and also the funding for all the supplies and equipment needed so that these kids can learn a trade. She has also implented some new policies for these kids and my hat goes off to her.

I also don't know the Food Services Director, but it seems rather absurd to me that she is making $20K MORE than the Superintendent who has two masters degrees, or $10K more than a school principal or school psychologist, some of whom probably (or at least hopefully) have advanced degrees. Only in Peabody...

But the problem with this list is most of the people on it are not in the classrooms teaching our kids. They are "administrative". I would like to see less housemasters, directors, and co-ordinators. Give the teachers who are in class all day really teaching not "administering" the higher pay.

My sentiments exactly Bonnie-Jean. Too many chiefs and not enough indians...and please (anyone not you Bonnie-Jean) don't get on me about this statement with the whole politically correct thing...
