The line outside of Conway Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home stretched around the building more than an hour before fallen firefighter James Rice's wake was scheduled to begin Thursday afternoon.

Emergency responders representing departments across Massachusetts funnelled into the Lynn Street funeral home shortly before 3 p.m. to pay their respects to Rice, 42, who died in the line of duty while battling a fire on Hancock Street last week.

Rice's was the first death in the line of duty in several years for the Fire Department.

The funeral service is scheduled to begin Friday at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, located at 16 Church St.
