Peabody Kids Vote for Obama, Brown, Tisei

Elementary students accompanied their parents to the polls on Tuesday to cast their own votes, and vote they -- 1,003 ballots were cast.

[The following was submitted by Sudi Smoller of the Peabody Education Foundation.]

The votes of 1,003 Peabody elementary students on Tuesday mirrored actual results except that, unlike their parents, the kids elected Richard Tisei over John Tierney.

The race for U.S. Representative was a close one with students and their parents, but with a different result. Students elected Tisei with 418 votes over the actual winner, incumbent Tierney, who received 388 of the students’ votes.

The students voted almost 2 to 1 in favor of the Obama/Biden ticket. Obama received 617 votes to Romney’s 318.

Like their parents, students bucked the statewide trend and chose Scott Brown (604 votes) over Elizabeth Warren (305 votes).

The Kids Voting Peabody program is sponsored by the Peabody Education Foundation (PEF). PEF volunteers staffed the city’s polls on Election Day at special Kids Voting tables, provided ballots and curriculum to elementary schools and compiled the kids’ voting results.

KidsVoting© is a nationally organized program that teaches students about the election process. Through classroom curriculum, students at all grade levels learn about our government, the state and/or national elections and the current candidates, and everyone’s right to vote.

On Election Day students accompany their parents to their local polls where they “vote” with special ballots. The students’ results are later tallied and the outcome is announced in the schools. Students learn the process of voting and the importance of being “counted” in an election.

The Peabody Education Foundation supports teachers with programs that provide additional materials and programs proposed by the schools’ teachers, as well as technology for classrooms.

Additionally, the PEF brings human resources into the classroom through its Guest Reader and Kids Voting programs.

The PEF, a non-profit organization, also raises money to provide the much-needed revenue to support all of these activities. By establishing partnerships with Peabody’s business community and citizens, the foundation serves to increase excellence in public education.
