Highway Bridge Work and Traffic Delays Expect to Go All Week

The bridge work on I-95 that caused significant delays last week is expected to last all this week too.

Traffic backups and slow-going will continue this week along I-95 again because of bridge work. The roadwork being conducted by the state Department of Transportation has now switched over to the southbound side of the highway -- work on the northbound side began early this month.

The state Department of Transportation said in a statement that work resumed at 10 p.m. on Sunday and will run through noon on Friday, Aug. 31.

“There will be multiple lane closures on the section of I-95 South in the vicinity of the off ramp to Route 1 South in Peabody to allow work crews to complete bridge deck repairs and paving operations,” the state highway department said.

The work, which started last Monday, is on the bridge over Lowell Street and some abandoned railroad tracks.

“The work will be completed in two phases with the first phase focusing on the left lanes and the second phase focusing on the right lanes,” the DOT said.

The work is just south of the town line into Danvers and backed up traffic well into Danvers each morning during rush hour last week.

The off ramp from I-95 South to Route 1 South will remain open during the work, the DOT said, but will be down to just a single lane.

The DOT will use a “Real Time Traffic Management system” that will give drivers travel time information about how long it will take to get through the work zone.

Due to the expected delay, the state DOT is encouraging drivers to seek alternate routes and make plans to expect delays.

The work is part of a $5.7 million project to make pavement on a section of I-95 in Peabody and to install a median guardrail between Peabody and Boxford.

What effect will this have on Lowell St traffic?

Dick, the construction may not have any affect on Lowell Street unless there's a long backup on Route 1. The work is just on the I-95 overpass and ramps to and from Route 1, which go over Lowell Street.

There has been an effect on Lowell Street as earlier work resulted in some lane closures at various hours due to debris being collected under these bridges during construction, on Lowell Street. Backups westbound during the day have gone as far as Prospect Street. Perhaps our Police Department could advise residents should this happen again, as they have had detail officers parked under these bridges.

Emmanuel, thanks. Didn't realize that was happening, and you're correct, the only alerts so far have been about the lane closures on the highway itself.

I know this is an older article, but do you know what their time frame is to finish this project? I drive this part of 95 daily and it seems the major work is done, as there has been no work being done over the past few weeks. When are they going to do the final paving work, I'm getting tired of the raised expansion jonits, as is my car!!
