Boys' Indoor Track Heads to Nationals
Several members of the Peabody High indoor track team are competing with the best of the best in the nation this weekend in New York.
About a dozen members of the Peabody Tanners' indoor track program, which captured another conference title this year, and coach Fernando Braz are headed to New York this weekend for the New Balance Indoor Nationals at the Armory. Each runner qualified during the season to compete in this meet.
The level of competition, which runs Friday to Sunday, is broken up into Elites, Freshmen and Emerging Elites.
Senior Nick Christensen, who has one of the top mile times in the nation (4:12.56) going into the meet, will naturally compete at the elite level in the mile, 5,000 meter and the sprint medley.
The rest of the Tanners to compete are: Austin Brewster (60 meter, 4x200, sprint medley relays), Chris Cennami (60 meter, 4x200), T.J. D'Amato (4x400), Tommy Drover (4x400), Nat Gaye (60, 4x200), Zachary Grube (high jump, 4x400), Nick Ingham (4x400, sprint medley), Bobby Losanno (60, 4x200, sprint medley), Tommy Martinez (4x400) and Michael Reardon (4x200).
Ingham, Grube, Brewster, D'Amato, Christensen, Gaye and Losanno, along with Jacob Freedman, Evan Braz and Keane Terenzoni, all competed in the national championships last year as well.
Braz told the Salem News recently that Christensen was still recovering from a lower leg injury, which prevented him from competing in the state meet. Christensen did run the fastest mile in the state during the season at a meet held at Boston University and it was also the 10th all-time quickest by any Massachusetts high school athlete, the Salem News reported.
The sprint medley relay team did win the Division 1 State Relays with the fastest time in New England this season (1:56.2). Grube placed third at the Division 1 Meet, jumping 6-4, and 8th at All-States (6-2).
Results from this weekend will be posted at www.armorytrack.com.
