5 Things to Know: Sheridan Honored With Distinguished Service Award
Athletic Director Phil Sheridan will receive a special award this spring for his 15 years of service as AD in the district and the public will get an update on the new Higgins Middle School tonight.
Today is Tuesday, Jan. 29. Here are five things to know today in Peabody.
- Peabody's Phil Sheridan will be honored with a special award on March 20 for his 15 years of service as Athletic Director for the Peabody Public Schools. The National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (say that 10 times fast) Distinguished Service Award will be bestowed by the Massachusetts Secondary Schools Athletic Directors Association at an annual awards banquet in Hyannis. "Congratulations again for this most deserving and prestigious honor. You are to be commended for your years of service and dedication to youth in athletics," reads the award letter, and School Committee members offered similar praise to Sheridan last week upon hearing the news.
- Minuteman Regional High School Assistant Principal John Dillon is next up today in the second of three public interviews with Superintendent Joe Mastrocola of the finalists for principal's job at the high school. The third candidate will be interviewed tomorrow. Each interview will take place at the Kiley School and begin at 3:30 p.m. with time for the public to ask questions.
- Higgins project: The public will be able to get a look at much more detailed designs for a new Higgins Middle School tonight, along with a general update on the project. The School Committee will host an informational public meeting at 7 p.m. at the Kiley School.
- The state of the city: Mayor Ted Bettencourt will give his mid-term state of the city address again before the Peabody Area Chamber of Commerce for a breakast event Jan. 30 at the Holiday Inn from 7:30-9 a.m.
- "One Sweet Evening": The ArcWorks Community Art Center will host “One Sweet Evening” on Feb. 7, an early Valentine’s celebration featuring special treats, champagne, the jazz stylings of The Gardner Street Band and a showing of a new line of Shine Jewelry.

Congrats to Phil Sheridan for all those years of keeping Peabody athletics going, even under some of the toughest times and conditions.

Phil is one of the best people I know. He always has the best interest of all students, whether they are athletes or not, in his heart. He's a great advocate for the youth in Peabody and seems well deserving of this award!
